Grace Doty

Grace Doty

Grace Doty is an artist I’ve watching for some time and I think someone in town (whether my friends in Nashville, or LA) needs to start watching her as well. It would be wise.  Where will it all lead? Who knows – but she certainly possesses talent. Watch any of her videos and you’ll see.  At this time you’ll mostly find her doing covers on Youtube – but she will also sing an original from time to time.  There’s something there. Really is.  And as you know, I’m almost always right – and no artist makes it on NashvilleHype! unless I am.

Get on it.

Another Update From The Front Lines Of My Director of Marketing Position

By
Another Update From The Front Lines Of My Director of Marketing Position

Since my last post business prospects for the company I currently work for as Director of Marketing continue to improve.

  • The January event increased gate sales by 16% over the previous year. Interestingly, during that year the spend was some $25,000 more than I budgeted for this event.  The entertainment package offered went from Nationally known recording artist to simply a local DJ.
  • After the January event, we scheduled an additional event last minute – one that would take place only 3 weeks later (and one I might add that eliminated well over 1/2 of our target demographic).  I was able in only 3 weeks time to market this event so successfully that we managed to match internal estimates, and beat external estimates 4 fold.
  • Our most recent event, taking place in February, had even more shocking positive results – a 5% increase over total gate from the previous year, despite every conceivable reason and conventional wisdom why it shouldn’t – most especially, the competition out spending us on entertainment and marketing 50:1, the other events taking place on the same weekend with the potential to split out demographic, and yet another event (world known) taking place right down the road. In addition, the government and local press were clearly in the corner of our competitor.  My marketing literally decimated the competition by turning their strengths into weaknesses (not in a harsh or out of bounds way, but in a way that ‘turned the tables’ in the minds of our shared demographic) and were it not for the deep pockets which back up that business, I’m confident they could not carry on.  It was a classic case study on the difference between a professional marketer (myself) and an amateur (their team).  That 5% gain should have, and could have, easily been a 25-40% loss.

Some interesting Social Media/Advertising/Email/Website statistics follows:

  • In November the business counted 28,000 Facebook fans among it’s ranks – it now has over 36,000.
  • The performance of the Facebook ads came in over .2 average. I created 10 ads over the life of the campaign, continuing to test and tweak.  One ad had a steady .453, and another actually posted a .913 (something no one I’ve spoken with has ever seen before – we’re all shocked at a .5, .6, or .7).  In understanding how important these statistics are it’s important to note – you do well on that platform to achieve a .2.
  • Over the last 4 seasons (since opening) our website has always been on a shared server.  The growth of the site under my direction has caused us to move to a VPS.  In fact, for several weeks we were running so much traffic the provider was continually checking to see if we had a DDOS attack of some type happening.  The server load became so un-balanced that it tripped and completely shut our site down, forcing the move. In a two hour period we actually had over 36,000 hits to our site and kept bumping up to the threshold limit.  The determination was that it all came from legitimate traffic and the only recourse was to move us from shared to VPS.
  • Email Marketing has really shined and is something I’ve not spoken about.  We use Constant Contact which is a good service and has very reliable stats.  Our highest email Open Rate for the last event achieved 31.5% — the lowest 18.2% (on the third and final email of the campaign).  The average open rate in our market segment is 19%, so I was able to easily beat that statistic when coupled with the first email which had an Open Rate of 27.3%.
  • My marketing achievements concerning Email doesn’t end there.  In addition to an Open Rate well above the average, we also blew out the average Click Thru Rate (which averages around 16% in our market segment) with a high of 29.8% (once again this high came from email #2). Email #1 had a CTR of 11.8% and Email #3 had a 20.6%.  So both in terms of Open Rate and CTR it was a tremendous win.

One lesson from this latest email campaign is this – Video is King!  Placing a video in the email helped those high CTR’s, and in the 2 emails where video was a choice, 69% chose it in one email, and over 50% chose it in another.  If you’re reading this and hoping to learn some tips (and I don’t give away information often) the tip is this – make sure to provide directional links on the video page if you’re hoping to get people to buy.  Don’t simply rely on placing them within the email itself as people will not return to the email.

We now have enough reliable information to show that pre-sales account for an average 10% of total gate sales.

Though continuing to work with this company, I am open for consultations.

Small Business Marketing Results That Matter – Shocking Results You Have To See To Believe!

By
Small Business Marketing Results That Matter – Shocking Results You Have To See To Believe!

Several months ago I took the position of Director of Marketing for a local company.  This was the first time I’ve ever taken a position with another company, outside of working for myself, since I started doing marketing and PR.  The 3 reasons I took the position are quite simple: I liked the business.  I liked the owner.  And I felt that I could really make improvements to their overall marketing plan by disrupting what they had been doing – specifically by utilizing the power of Social Media in a way that would increase their bottom line in dramatic ways.

The pictures below represent the 2 months before I began, followed by the 3 months since I’ve been there.  For those who don’t like looking at charts I’ll just give you the upshot:

  • From June to July there were 22,000 fans and 19,000 post views.
  • From July to August there were 23,000 fans and 56,000 page views (it’s important to note that this is an ‘events’ driven company and both of these months reflect an event taking place.  The next event would not be taking place until November so I had approximately 3 months to drive the next event)
  • From August (the month I began) to September, I drove the company from 56,000 post views to 560,000.
  • From September to October I drove post views even higher – from 560,000 to 735,000. Fans again increased by a multiple of thousands to 26,000.
  • From October ’til our event I drove post views to 883,000 (and please note the 30 day tracking ended and this stat includes only a fraction of the time).
  • Fans increased from 23,000 in August to 28,000 in November – a 21% increase.

Post views increased 1,477% in the same August-November time frame.

Average post views rank at over 10,000 – and the number of engaged fans rose to 26,000 (out of 28,000).  A tremendous win!  But what did it do for the company and for the event in terms of real revenue?

This company pre-sales event tickets online prior to every event.  For the November event they sold over times the amount they sold for their 4th of July event.  They also sold 1 1/2 times the amount of their biggest selling event ever – Memorial Day.  What’s important to note is this: Both of those are holidays where, traditionally, people have time off and freedom to attend events such as this company markets.  The November event was a typical weekend event – not a holiday.

“At the Gate” sales (overall sales) beat every other 3 day event weekend (held over a 3 year period!) by a 45% margin.  These are real dollars driven to the bottom line.

June-July

July-August

August-September

September-October

October-November Event (shorter time period)

The company currently has over 29,000 fans and 1.2 million post views for the 30 days beginning Oct and ending today.

If you take nothing away from this and these stats – please take this away — in order to see increase after increase after increase like those above, it’s imperative that you disrupt what you’re doing and find ways to best utilize the tools at your disposal.  It often takes an outsider, a professional, to fill in the blanks and make the changes needed.

Though continuing to work with this company, I am open for consultations.

Get To Know Artist Veron Ennis

By
Get To Know Artist Veron Ennis

Veron Ennis is one of my best friends and someone I simply adore like no other person alive today.  She is also one of the world’s great artist.  What does she have to do with Nashville?  Nothing per se, but sometimes I think Nashville needs a touch of class and is woefully lacking in world renowned art.  Sure, there’s the Frist Center and the Libraries, and such, but they don’t yet have an Ennis hanging in them – like serious collectors have throughout not only the country – but literally, the world.  And they should.  I don’t say this with hyperbole – I truly believe Veron will one day be considered one of the great artist of this century.

Below is a kind of ‘introduction’ to Veron, her art, her process, and her life.  I hope there are those of you who read NashvilleHype! (and there probably are) with serious connections who will advocate to the powers that be to place an Ennis in their gallery, their museum, or their home.  It’s time that Nashville gets a taste of what people in places like NY, Washington DC, Miami, Atlanta, Germany, Latvia (Latvia! for crying out loud), already have hanging on their walls.

Patrice Majors Has Her Focus On The 615

By
Patrice Majors Has Her Focus On The 615

The rumors are true – as a trial run, The Latest Hype! with Patrice Majors was a huge success!

Patrice had approached me several months ago about advice for starting her own Nashville focused blog.  I told her that if she’d like to give it a try, I was more than happy to let her write for NashvilleHype!, get her feet wet, learn about blogging, see if it was something she wanted to do, and help her gain a voice and an audience.  She did in spades and it wasn’t too long after, because of her professionalism and dedication, I asked if she would be willing to be the Editor of NashvilleHype!.

Patrice is a real professional in every way.  Once she found her own voice, with a focus on more signed acts, her post lit up like wildfire and the numbers tell the tale.  Articles on Due West are very popular, Trace Adkins fans came out in droves, and Sarah Darling can rest easy knowing she has a lot of fans in her corner.

The Latest Hype! is very popular – but it also has a different focus than the one NashvilleHype! has been known for, so Patrice has decided to split it off from NashvilleHype! altogether – a decision I stand behind 110%.  Patrice is a true and trusted friend who I love and respect and I couldn’t be more proud of the way she’s grown over the past few months.

Patrice will now be writing at her own site – Focus on the 615.  Focus on the 615 will cover major and up-and-coming artist who are already signed, as well as various events and functions throughout Nashville.  Focus on the 615 will do exactly what the name implies – Focus entirely on Nashville, whether it’s music, movies, art, or fashion – Patrice will have it covered.

I hate losing her as Editor, but she’s not moving on, really she’s just moving sideways.  Having her own site was the original goal, and covering the artist that most are familiar with, as opposed to those no one knows, opens up more opportunities and greater access.  The Latest Hype! proved conclusively that she could create and sustain an audience and do so in a professional and dedicated manner.  And it’s time.

UPDATE:  All of the Latest Hype! articles are now on Focus on the 615 – AND the latest (and last!) installment of the “Getting to know Due West” series is on site as well.

Moccasin Creek – Introducing My Favorite New Song – Dixie Fried

If there’s a song I’ve listened to 10,000 times in the past two weeks, this is the one.  ’Dixie Fried’ might as well be my life long mantra – it’s almost as if Jeff ‘Brahma Bull’ McCool and Charlie ‘CB3′ Bonnet III followed me around most of my life just taking notes.  Love this song, these guys are cool, radio needs to jump on board in a big way, and Nashville needs to welcome them with open arms.  These guys are Moccasin Creek and they absolutely rule with this song.
